Biological Description

Monopodial epiphyte of medium size.
The roots are long, branching, smooth.
The stem is shortened, hidden by the bases of the leaves.
The leaves are fleshy, dark green, shiny, oblong-oval. About 30 cm long, 5-8 cm wide.
Peduncle perennial, shorter or equal to the length of the leaves, drooping, simple or branching. Flowering revolving, so flowering can last up to several months.
Flowers with a diameter of 4-5 cm, star-shaped, waxy texture, slightly aromatic. Petals are creamy white, sometimes yellowish or with a green tint with broad transverse spots of yellowish-brown or red-brown color. Lilac lip with a white edging.

Range, environmental features

Philippines ( Mindoro , Mindanao , Luzon , Sulu ) and the western part of Borneo .
In moist evergreen mountain forests at heights of up to 600 meters above sea level. On the trunks and branches of trees.
The peak of flowering is spring and summer, but can bloom at any time of the year.
In nature, rare. It belongs to the number of protected species (second CITES appendix).

Description History

 

Phalaenopsis Maria is named after the wife of the director of the Botanical Garden of Trinity College in Dublin, FV Burbidge, who discovered it (FW Burbidge (1847-1905)). He found two plants in 1878 during an expedition to the Malaysian archipelago.
A species description was published in 1883.

In Culture

The temperature group is warm. For normal flowering, a day / night temperature difference of 5-8 ° C is mandatory.

Light requirements: 800-1000 FC , 8608-10760 lx [2] .

Peduncles are perennial, cut them off only after natural drying. It blooms at any time of the year.
