Career
Romero is a student of Racing from Avellaneda , in whose academy he ended up at 16 years old. In 2006, Romero was transferred to the main team, played four matches and conceded seven goals.
In July 2007, he moved to AZ for 1.5 million euros [2] . In the 2007/08 season, he was considered the second goalkeeper of the team, but in the next season the main goalkeeper Waterman was leased to ADO Den Haag . In the 2008/09 season, he is the only AZ player to have played all 22 matches without replacements; from the 12th to the 21st round he did not miss goals, having spent a “dry” series in 957 minutes [3] .
August 22, 2011 Sergio Romero signed a contract with the club of the second Italian league Sampdoria . The transfer amount and contract details were not reported [4] [5] . In the 2012/2013 season, he returned to Serie A with the club; since then the team has not dropped into the lower division. Altogether, Romero played 71 matches for Sampdoria , in which he conceded 75 goals.
In 2013, Romero moved to Monaco on loan, but played there in only three games and a year later returned back to Sampdoria .
On July 27, 2015, upon the expiration of the contract, he left Sampdoria and signed a contract with the English club Manchester United [6] , due to the uncertainty about the future main goalkeeper David De Gea . As a result, the Spaniard remained, and Romero became the reserve goalkeeper of the team and played mainly in cup tournaments.
Team Career
He was the first goalkeeper of the Argentina national team at the World Championship among youth under 20 years of 2007 , which Argentina won. He was included in the application for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing as a reserve goalkeeper. In the 1/4 final match against the Netherlands, the main goalkeeper of the Argentines Oscar Ustari was injured, and Romero had to enter the field instead of him in 75 minutes. He also played in the next two matches, and for the entire tournament did not miss a single goal.
At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , Argentina's head coach Diego Maradona made Romero the main goalkeeper, although by the start of the championship he had only 6 matches in his main team.
He was called to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and played all the matches in the first team, bringing the team to the final. On July 9, 2014, in a match with Holland, Sergio Romero scored 2 penalties in the post-match series, which allowed the Argentine national team to reach the final of the World Cup. July 14, 2014 in the final of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, in a match with the German national team, in the 113th minute Sergio missed the ball from Mario Götze , who was victorious for the Germans.
