Types of Government Departments
- Ministerial departments are headed by ministers , and deal with issues requiring direct political control. In most departments, the minister is called the Secretary of State [1] and is a member of the cabinet . The administrative management of the department is carried out by a civil servant (official) called the Permanent Deputy Minister .
- The executive agencies are subordinate to these ministerial departments. The executive agency is a non-governmental state body with partial autonomy to carry out its functions. They usually report to one or more government departments that establish the funding and strategic objectives of this agency.
- Non-ministerial departments deal with issues that do not require direct political control. They are headed by a civil servant (official). Some carry out regulatory or verification functions, and therefore their status should protect them from political interference. Some are headed by a permanent secretary or a second permanent secretary .
