The palatine bone ( lat. Os palatinum ) is the paired bone of the facial skull. It looks like a plate bent at an angle, lies in the posterior part of the nasal cavity, and forms part of its bottom (hard palate) and side wall there. There are horizontal and perpendicular plates. The horizontal plates of each of the palatine bones, in the joint, form the back of the median palatal suture. Together with the palatine processes of the maxillary bones lying in front, they are joined by a transverse palatine suture. There is a nasal crest along the medial edge, and a posterior nasal spine at the posterior-medial end of the horizontal plate.
