Not far from the cape was the island of Spartel, which sank about 12 thousand years ago [2] . Some researchers believe that this island was the legendary Atlantis . From the cape to the south one of the world's longest beach lines (47 km) stretches, washed by the clear waters of the ocean. On the Cape are the Hercules caves .
Due to its position at the junction of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, the area around the cape was of strategic importance. In October 1782, during the war for the independence of the USA , a battle took place between the British and the Spanish . A few hundred years later, during the years of the Spanish Civil War , a naval battle also occurred near the Cape.
