Al Hoceima is one of the youngest cities in Morocco. It was founded by the Spaniards in 1926 under the name Villa Sanjurho . The name was given in honor of General Jose Sanhurho , who during the Reef War landed on the sandy beach of Al Hoceima and declared it the possession of the Spanish crown.
For the first decades, Sanhurho served as the resort center of Spanish Morocco . Following the transfer of the coastal zone of Morocco, the population of Al Hoceima remained mostly Hispanic. The city was badly damaged during the 2004 earthquake , which claimed the lives of 560 residents of the city and its environs.
