Dresden ( German: Dresden ) is one of the three directional districts ( German: Direktionsbezirk ) of the state of Saxony in Germany .

Located in the east of the earth .
It was established on August 1, 2008 during the Saxon communal reform and replaced the administrative district of Dresden . It basically coincides with the Dresden district that existed in the GDR in 1952 - 1990 .
The management of the district since March 1, 2012 is carried out by the unified land administration of Saxony ( German: Landesdirektion Sachsen ).
The district includes 4 districts and 1 city, equated to the districts:
- city of Dresden ,
- Bautzen district,
- Goerlitz district,
- Meissen district,
- Saxon Switzerland - Eastern Ore Mountains .
In total there are 204 communes in the district. The population density is 209 people / km².
