Grimshaw interference overlap is a theme in chess composition in which two long-range divergent pieces (one of them may be a pawn ) in two versions are attracted to the same field, where they overlap each other.
In an orthodox two-way task, such involvement leads to an immediate mate . In three- and multi-way tasks or studies, the overlapping of the Grimshaw can be carried out with critical moves of thematic figures (see “ The Grimshaw Theme ”). Discovered by the English problemologist W. Grimshaw ( 1832 - 1890 ) in 1850 ; it was later established that this combination was already encountered in one of the problems of F. Breda ( 1844 ).
