General information
The total collection fund of the Institute is about 60 million items and about 30 thousand zoological exhibits in the Zoological Museum . The results of the Institute’s scientific work are reflected in its main publications, “Fauna of Russia” and “Keys to the Fauna of Russia” (more than 300 volumes in total), and in other publications, such as, for example, Proceedings of the Zoological Institute, Parasitological collections, and Research fauna of the seas ”(also a total of more than 300 volumes).
History
In 2007, the institution turned 175 years old, although the history of creating the institute and museum collections began much earlier - from the time of Peter the Great , who personally bought exhibits for the Kunstkamera , the first Russian museum he created in 1714. The independent Zoological Museum was officially opened in July 1832, which is considered to be the time of its foundation. The building, now occupied by the institute and the museum (the southern warehouse of the Exchange ), was transferred for the needs of the latter in the 1890s; the grand opening of the museum in it took place in 1901. In 1930, the museum was transformed into the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences [3] .
During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 , the scientific team of the Zoological Institute suffered heavy losses, as evidenced by the plaque at the entrance to the building. The largest entomologists among those who died in besieged Leningrad were D. A. Ogloblin, A. N. Reikhardt, A. P. Semenov-Tian-Shansky , A. S. Skorikov, S. S. Smirnov, and others.
