History

The post of President of the Republic of Guinea was established by the Constitution on November 10, 1958 . According to her and the amendments adopted in subsequent years, the President of the Republic of Guinea was elected by universal and direct vote for a term of 7 years. He was the head of state, the head of government (the Cabinet of Ministers, consisting of ministers and state secretaries), and the commander in chief of the armed forces, and also represented the country abroad. The president has appointed and dismissed ministers and other civilian and military officials. Ahmed Sekou Toure , who was officially elected to this post during the first general presidential election on January 15, 1961, became the first president with the wording “ under the authority of the government ”. Prior to this, from the declaration of independence on October 2, 1958 until the adoption of the Constitution, the Chairman of the Guinean Government Council, Ahmed Sekou Toure, also headed the state and government and was officially called the President of the Republic of Guinea. He was re-elected as President of the Republic in 1968 , 1974 and 1982 .

The President of the Republic of Guinea, Lansana Conte, was appointed to this post in 1984 by a decision of the Military Committee for National Renaissance . Following the adoption of the 1990 Constitution , he was elected President of the Republic in multi-party elections on December 19, 1993 . He was re-elected on December 14, 1998 and December 21, 2003 (for a period until December 2010 ).

Lansana Conte suddenly died on December 22, 2008 and, according to the Constitution, his duties were transferred to the President of the National Assembly (that is, to the Speaker of the Parliament) Abubakar Sompara , who was to hold the election of a new President of the Republic within 60 days. However, on December 24, 2008, the duties of the President of the Republic were transferred to Captain Mousse Dadi Camare, as agreed between the government of Prime Minister Ahmed Tidiana Suare and the military, who created the National Council for Democracy and Development . The term of office of Mussa Dadi Camara is two years, until the end of December 2010 , when free elections are due to take place.
