History
The artificial (asphalt concrete) runway of the airfield, built in the 1960s , had a length of 1900 m (now it is used as a taxiway ).
In the early 1980s, parallel to the old runway, a new concrete runway of 2500 m length was built, and in the early 1990s it was extended to 3000 m, which made it possible to take the IL-86 airbus [1] . The airfield Nukus is the role of a spare airfield in the Aral Sea region since Soviet times.
From the 1960s to the early 1990s, passenger flights were carried out on An-2 planes on local airlines (in particular, to Muinak , Kungrad , Urgench , Takhtakupyr, Kazakhdarya, Aspantay, Tuley ).
Until the early 1990s, the 162nd flight unit of the Uzbek Department of the USSR Ministry of Civil Aviation ( An-2 , Yak-40 ) was based at the airfield of Nukus.
In the Soviet period, the Nukus airfield was also used as a military airfield . The 287th Separate Test Aviation Squadron was based here - military unit 22581 ( An-26 planes , Mi-8 helicopters ) used to provide the Eighth Chemical Protection Station military ground operating on the Ustyurt plateau in the vicinity of the village of Zhaslyk . In 1993, the squadron was withdrawn to Russia at the airfield Bagai-Baranovka .
In 2005, a new terminal was built at the airport [3] , and in 2006–2007 , modern lighting equipment was installed [4] .
As of 2014, a number of An-2 aircraft used for aerial work on the territory of Karakalpakstan are based at the airfield of Nukus.

There are regular flights to Moscow by Uzbekistan Havo Yollari and Ural Airlines. June 20, 2011 began large-scale reconstruction of the runway . Within 110 days, asphalt concrete pavement was laid on a 3000-meter-long section. In addition to the reconstruction of the runway, the apron and aircraft parking were overhauled at the airport [6] The capacity of the air terminal was 200 people / hour. The air terminal complex consists of two terminals, which include lounges for serving departing and arriving passengers, handling baggage, mail and cargo of international and local destinations .
On July 11, 2018, the renewed passenger terminal of the Nukus International Airport began operation [2] . The terminal now has a capacity of 400 passengers per hour. According to Konysbay Nuratdinov (head of the passenger traffic management service at the Nukus International Airport), negotiations are underway with the Kazakh airline Scat Airlines to open flights to Nukus from Almaty and Aktau. Ural Airlines is expected to resume regular flights to Moscow in October
