Gambit John Cochran

Of great interest is another option proposed by Cochran for white in the Russian Party (also bearing his name ): 1. e4 e5 2. Kf3 Kf6 3. K: e5 d6 4. K: f7 ?! Cochran analyzed the opening constructions a lot and knew some variations by heart up to 15-16 moves, like modern chess players. The parties in which Cochran used his gambit against Indian chess players are given in Staunton's debut leadership.

Cochran Defense

Cochran Defense is a defense developed by John Cochran to protect the weakest side in the endless endgame “rook and bishop versus rook”. The main idea is to connect the king and the elephant of the strongest side when at least two horizontal or vertical lines are between them and the defending king of the weakest side.

For the defender, an accurate game is required. Protection works well in the center of the board and is not effective at the edge. It works when:

  • the defending rook connects the bishop and the horse of the strongest side on one of the four verticals (from C to F) or horizontals (from the 3rd to the 6th).
  • between kings two or more vertical or horizontal.

Cochran's defense is also effective for the endgame “rook and knight versus rook”.
