The regulatory subunit 1 of cyclin-dependent kinase 5 , abbreviated CDK5R1, is one of the neuron-specific activators of CDK5 , along with CDK5R2 . It has two forms, p35 and p25 . P25 is formed by cleavage of p35 with calpain , while the protein moves from the periphery of the cell to the nucleus and perinuclear regions. P25 deregulates the activity of CDK5, prolonging the activation of this kinase and changing its cellular location. In humans, it is encoded by the CDK5R1 gene [1] [2] .

In Alzheimer's disease , excessive accumulation of p25 in the brain is noted, which correlates with an increase in CDK5 activity and can hypothetically slow down the phosphorylation of tau protein associated with microtubules, contributing to the pathological process [2] .
