Background

After the capture of Grozny by the Russian armed forces in early February 2000, a large group of Chechen fighters retreated to the Shatoi region of Chechnya, where on February 9 it was blocked by federal troops [3] . Airstrikes using one and a half - ton detonating bombs were inflicted on militant positions [4] . Then on February 22-29 a ground battle ensued after Chatoy . The militants managed to break out of the encirclement : the group of Ruslan Gelayev broke through in the north-west direction to the village of Komsomolskoye ( Urus-Martan district ), and the group of Khattab - in the north-eastern direction through Ulus-Kert ( Shatoi district ), where the battle took place.

Parties

The federal forces consisted of the 6th company of the 2nd battalion of the 104th parachute regiment of the 76th (Pskov) Airborne Division (Guard Lieutenant Colonel M.N. Yevtyukhin ), a group of 15 soldiers of the 4th company (Guard Major A. V. Dostalov ) and the 1st company of the 1st battalion of the 104th paratrooper regiment (Guard Major S.I. Baran ).

Artillery division of the 104th paratrooper regiment provided fire support to the paratroopers.

Among the leaders of the militants were Idris, Abu al-Walid , Shamil Basaev and Khattab : the units of the last two field commanders in the media were called the White Angels battalions (600 soldiers each). According to the Russian side, up to 2.5 thousand militants participated in the battle; According to militants, their squad totaled 700 fighters.

On February 28, the commander of the 104th regiment, Colonel S. Yu. Melentyev ordered the commander of the 6th company, Major S. G. Molodov, to occupy the dominant height of Ista-Kord. The company advanced on February 28 and reached a height of 776, and 12 scouts were sent to Mount Ista-Kord, 4.5 km away.

On February 29 at 12:30 a reconnaissance patrol entered into battle with a group of about 20 militants and was forced to retreat to altitude 776, where Molodov's company entered the fray. He was wounded and died later that day, and Lieutenant Colonel Mark Yevtyukhin assumed command of the company.

At 16 hours, just four hours after the capture of Shatoy by the federal forces, the battle began [5] . Only two platoons fought, as the third platoon, which stretched for 3 kilometers while climbing, was fired upon and destroyed by militants on the slope.

By the end of the day, the 6th company lost 31 people dead (33% of the total personnel) [6] [7] .

On March 1, at 3 a.m., a group of soldiers led by Major A.V. Dostalov (15 people) was able to break into the encirclement, who, breaking the order, left the defensive lines of the 4th company at a neighboring height and came to the rescue.

Fighters of the 1st company of the 1st battalion sought to help the comrades. However, during the crossing of the Abazulgol River , they were ambushed and forced to gain a foothold on the shore. Only in the morning of March 3 the 1st company managed to break through to the positions of the 6th company [8] .

Consequences

 Height 776 after the battle.

March 1 at 05:00 the height was occupied by mercenaries and fighters of illegal armed groups .

Captain V.V. Romanov, after the death of M.N. Yevtyukhin , who commanded the company, caused fire on himself . The height was covered with artillery fire, but the militants managed to break out of the Argun Gorge .

The commander of the reconnaissance platoon of the guard, senior lieutenant A. V. Vorobyov, killed the field commander Idris (according to other sources, Idris died only in December 2000 [9] ).

Survivors

After the death of A. V. Dostalov , only one officer was left alive - Lieutenant D. S. Kozhemyakin . He ordered the senior sergeant Alexander Suponinsky to crawl to the cliff and jump, he picked up a machine gun to cover the soldier. Fulfilling the officer’s order, Suponinsky and Andrei Porshnev crawled to the cliff and jumped, and by the middle of the next day they reached the location of the Russian troops. Alexander Suponinsky, the only one of the six survivors, was awarded the gold star of the Hero of Russia [10] . Guard Private Tymoshenko was also injured. The militants searched for him in a bloody trail, but the soldier was able to hide under the rubble of trees.

Ordinary Roman Khristolyubov and Alexei Komarov were in the third platoon, which did not reach a height and died on a slope. They did not participate in the battle at the height.

Private Evgeny Vladykin was left alone without ammunition, in a fight he was hit with a butt on the head, he lost consciousness. When he woke up, he was able to get to his own.

Only 6 fighters survived.

The Dead

84 [1] soldiers of the 6th and 4th companies, including 13 officers, were killed in the battle.

Further Events

Regiment Commander

Regiment commander S. Yu. Melentyev was transferred to Ulyanovsk by the chief of staff of the brigade [10] . On May 2, 2000, a criminal case No. 14/33 / 0185-00 was instituted against him at the military prosecutor's office (military unit 20102) on the grounds of a crime under Part 2 of Art. 293 of the Criminal Code (negligence, resulting in negligence grave consequences). During the preliminary investigation, his guilt was established, however, on May 30, 2000 the criminal case with the consent of S. Yu. Melentyev was terminated on the basis of paragraph 4 of part 1 of Art. 5 of the CCrP of the RSFSR as a result of the amnesty act (Decree of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation dated 26.05.00 No. 398-III of the State Duma "On declaring amnesty in connection with the 55th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45") [20] . Two years later, on June 22, 2002 [8] Sergei Yuryevich Melentyev died of a heart attack during a morning run near the military unit in Tula [20] and was buried in the village of Kromy, Orel Region.

Criminal prosecution of hiding militants

On March 2, 2000, the Khankala military prosecutor's office launched an investigation into the case of members of illegal armed groups, which was then sent to the Office of the General Prosecutor of the Russian Federation to investigate crimes in the field of federal security and interethnic relations in the North Caucasus. At the same time, the investigation established that "the actions of military officials, including the command of the United Group of Forces (forces) ... in the performance of the duties of preparing, organizing and conducting combat by units of the 104th paratrooper regiment do not constitute a crime" [21] .

Soon, the case was closed by Deputy Prosecutor General S. N. Fridinsky [22] , but later his investigation was resumed. When the bandits Rashid Atuov, Kemal Ebzeev and Khamidulla Yapov were arrested, the investigation found out that they had participated in the attack on the 6th company, and the investigation of the case resumed. Formally, Atuov, Ebzeev, and Yapov, who had previously been prosecuted, were charged under Articles 209 (“Banditry”) and 317 of the Criminal Code (“Attempt on the life of law enforcement officers”). On March 12, 2012, the court sentenced Ebzeev and Yapov to 14 years in prison, and Atuov to 13 [23] .

A number of other participants in the attack on military personnel also appeared before the court, and the search for suspects continues without a statute of limitations. In particular, the following participants were convicted in the case:

Criticism

Original text
6th Company had barely survived three basic errors: failure to establish an all-around defense; failure to aggressively conduct reconnaissance of the enemy's expected approach route, especially given the Chechen reputation for tactical skill, reconnaissance and working around the flanks; and failure to heed warnings about the Chechen force's approach. For some reason, 6th Company did not anticipate with sufficient seriousness and energy the danger it had been assigned to forestall. It seems likely that weak command at the company level was compounded by a lack of timely supervision by the adjacent battalion headquarters.
— Wilmoth MD, Tsouras PG Ulus-Kert: An Airborne Company's Last Stand [7]

The battlefield says a lot. Kozhemyakin , the commander of the reconnaissance platoon, is a good melee and, apparently, resisted great. His face was completely broken by the rifle butts, and several stabbed gunmen lay nearby. Probably, as the last officer, they wanted to take him alive.

The anonymous opinion of the officer regarding Suponinsky contradicts the testimony of the commander of the 108th paratrooper regiment of the 7th airborne assault division, Colonel Sergei Ivanovich Baran: [8]

On March 1, at 5.00, I ordered the fighters to prepare to advance to the Abazulgol bed. The soldiers were so exhausted that they barely moved their legs, practically crawled, and did not go up. But I have no complaints against them, everyone has a limit of opportunity. By 6.00, going up to the clearing that bald near the river bed, on the steep opposite bank of Abazulgol, we noticed three soldiers coming up to the cliff. As soon as they saw us, they began to wave their arms and shout: “Wait! Wait! Do not go here! Here are the fighters! Ambush! ”Having arrived in time for the precipice, these soldiers without hesitation drove down to the river. The cliff is concrete there, up to 30 meters deep. ... I gave a command to the personnel of the group to cross the river, climb the slope and take positions along the cliff. Major Velichenko with three fighters went deep into the forest for reconnaissance. ... let down those fighters who jumped off a cliff. These were Alexander Suponinsky, Andrey Porshnev and Evgeny Vladykin. The meaning of their words is as follows: “The battle is over. All are killed. Don’t go there, to the height - the militants are waiting for you. ”
