Battiada ( Battida ; ancient Greek Βαττιάδαι ) is an ancient Greek dynasty of the kings of Cyrene and all of Cyrenaica . Rules from 630 to 440 BC. e. The name comes from the founder of the dynasty - Batt I.
History
The origin of its kind led from the Cretan and Ferian aristocratic families. In 630 BC. e. Butt founded the city of Cyrene (it later gave the name of the entire region - Cyrenaica). The economic foundations of the state laid Arkesilay I. During the reign of his successor, Batt II, the state expanded significantly, thanks to the influx of Greek colonists and the seizure of land from the Libyan tribes. From this point on, the contacts of the Battiad dynasty with the rulers of Egypt are also recorded - first they were the pharaohs , and later the satraps of the Persian Empire .
In 525 BC. e. Battiad recognized the power of Persia. At the same time, the contradictions between the nobility and the kings became acute. This led to the overthrow in 515 BC. e. power of arqueslail iii . However, under Batte IV, the power of the Battiads was restored, thanks to the support of the Persians. From this point to the middle of the 460s BC. e. the heyday of the power of the Battiad continues.
The defeat of the Persian Empire in the wars with the Greeks led to a decrease in support for the power of the kings of the Battiad. In turn, citizens of the cities of Cyrenaica rose against the authority of the king. Finally, in 440 BC. e. Battiad power in the cities of Cyrenaica fell.
