Pohnpei is one of four states in the Federated States of Micronesia . Until 1984, the state was called Ponape . Located in the central-eastern part of FSM. The area of the state is 344 km². The population of the state is 36 196 people. ( 2010 census). The population density is 105.22 people / km². The administrative center is the city of Colonia , which is 8 kilometers from the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia, Palikira .

Geography
Pohnpei Island is the largest in area and height, the most developed, the second most populated and densely populated island of the Federated States of Micronesia. The flora and fauna of the island is very diverse. Pohnpei is one of the wettest places on earth : the annual rainfall in individual mountainous areas is about 7600 mm.
Palikir is the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia, located on Pohnpei Island. Pohnpei International Airport (IATA PNI code) is located near Colonia, on a small island off the north coast of the main island.
The outer atolls of the state are , , Ant , Pakin , , Nukuoro and Kapingamarangi .
History
Pohnpei is famous for the ruins of the city of Nan Madol , which arose between 1285 and 1485 and lasted until about 1500. The megalithic structures of Nan Madol are comparable in scale in the Pacific region only with the megaliths of Easter Island .
