Biography
The son of a railway inspector. He began to study medicine, but in 1928 left it and entered the Amsterdam Conservatory , where he studied with Sema Dresden (composition) and Max Orobio de Castro (cello). Since 1932 he played the cello in the Utrecht Municipal Orchestra . In the same year, Van Otterlo, with his Suite No. 3, won the composer competition announced by the Concertgebau Orchestra and conducted his orchestra composition. In 1937 , he took the post of chief conductor of the Utrecht Municipal Orchestra and led the team until 1949 , and in 1949 - 1973 . headed the Hague Residence Orchestra . Since 1967 , van Otterlo also worked actively in Australia : until 1970 he directed the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra , and since 1970 , the Sydney Symphony Orchestra . Shortly before his farewell concert at the head of this group, van Otterlo died in a car accident.
