In 1992, at the time of its formation, it consisted of missile-carrying, assault, fighter, anti-submarine, search and rescue, transport and special aviation.
In 2012, only one naval aviation brigade remained at the Ukrainian naval forces with deployment at the Novofedorovka airbase near the city of Saki . The brigade consisted of two squadrons: marine aviation and marine helicopter. The Ukrainian Navy aviation no longer has combat jets. The last Su-25 attack aircraft during the reform were transferred to the air force . The air forces of Ukraine were also tasked with air defense of the Sevastopol Bay and the base of the Ukrainian Navy.
In March 2014, the equipment was transferred to the alternate airfield of the Ukrainian Air Force, and the air base in Novofedorovka passed under the leadership of the Russian troops and subsequently transferred to the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy.
