Exuvius

Mine-cap moth Incurvaria oehlmanniella. On the left is a butterfly on a pin, on the right is a cover with an exuding of a pupa sticking out of it, from which this butterfly emerged.

Exuvium - exoskeleton remaining after molting. As a rule, exuvium is called the cuticle of arthropods and nematodes that exfoliated and shed during molting (some authors refer to these two groups as molting ). Since the cuticle of arthropods not only covers the entire body from the outside, but also lines the front and back intestines, as well as (in many land forms) the trachea , all these structural details are also present on exuvia. Both nematodes and arthropod exuvia are formed by the outer layers of the cuticle, while the inner ones are destroyed during the molting process.
