The holy lot fell to the lot of the saint in managing the Novgorod flock: the clergyman Martha Boretskaya and her followers armed and revolted the people against the Grand Duke of Moscow, John III , and the monk Pimen, a supporter of the Boretsky, incited hatred towards the archbishop in the flock. Some of the Novgorodians were inclined to go over to the side of Lithuania, having betrayed the Moscow prince, and were ready to go on apostasy. Saint Theophilos stopped the rebellious Novgorodians: “Do not change Orthodoxy or I will not be the shepherd of the apostates, I will go back to the humble cell where you brought me to the disgrace of rebellion.” The renounced letter of the saint, written in 1479, has been preserved.
