He studied music from his father. At the age of 15 he became an organist in the church of his native town, in 1902 he was appointed organist and choirmaster in the Church of Our Lady in Maastricht. From 1908 he studied at the Liege Conservatory as an organist, in 1911-1914 . at the Cologne Conservatory as a conductor, at the same time from 1911 he taught piano at the city’s music school. Since 1916 , the principal and principal conductor of the Maastricht City Orchestra . According to the Hermans biographer, Hans van Dyck , in more than 30 years of work with the orchestra, Hermans has conducted over 900 concerts [1] .
The square in Maastricht is named after Hermans [2] .
