History
The order for the construction of the submarine was given on October 16, 1939 . The boat was laid down on June 17, 1940 at the Germaniaverft shipyard in Kiel under building number 635, and was launched on April 4, 1941 . The boat went into operation on May 17, 1941 under the command of Oberleutnant Herbert Opitz.

Service History
The boat made 3 military campaigns. Sank 2 vessels with a total displacement of 3,283 gross tonnage and one warship with a displacement of 925 tons. Missing in the Bay of Biscay , west of Saint-Nazaire after November 30, 1941 in an area with approximate coordinates of Presumably died in a Beech minefield exposed by British airplanes. 46 dead (entire crew).
Until August 1991, historians believed that U-206 was sunk on November 30, 1941 in the Bay of Biscay, west of Nantes France , in an area with coordinates depth charges from a British aircraft, but the U-71 , hiding intact, was subjected to this attack.
