Biography
Born in 1944 in Paris , where his family was forced to leave the dictatorship of I. Metaxas . Alexandros' father, Dimitris Giotopoulos , was a prominent Greek Trotskyist and L. D. Trotsky’s private secretary. In 1947, Alexandros returned to Greece, however, after a military coup and the establishment of the dictatorship of the black colonels , he was forced to flee to France in 1967 .
In Paris, he continues his research activities and works together with other refugees , including the famous Marxist theorist Nikos Pulanzas . With the beginning of student protests in 1968 , Giotopoulos is increasingly interested in armed struggle. Of the Greek refugees, he organizes the Trotskyist group "May 29" and begins to support the left underground in Greece.
In the second half of the 70s, he became one of the founders of the Revolutionary Organization "November 17th" . On July 18, 2002, Giotopoulos was arrested after interrogation of his fellow organization. On November 17, 2003, he was sentenced to 21 life imprisonment. After the review of the sentence in May 2007, the period was reduced to 17 life sentences, and the consideration of the case, which began in December 2005, lasted 246 days. During the trial, Alexandros Giotopoulos was supported by Alain Krivin and Pierre Vidal-Nake .
