El Jadida ( Arabic: الجديدة , French: El Jadida ) is a port city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco , the capital of the province of the same name . Old Portuguese Fortress - UNESCO World Heritage Site .

City History
The city was founded by the Portuguese in 1502 , when the Mazagan fortress was built to protect against the Moors . Under this name the city was known until 1769 , when it was captured and destroyed by Sultan Mohammed bin Abdullah .
In 1825, the Arabs rebuilt the city again, giving it the Arabic name "El Jadida," which can be translated into Russian as "new." However, after the transition of Morocco to the protectorate of France , when the city began to develop rapidly, it was returned to its old name. And only after the country gained independence, the name "El Jadida" became official.
In 2004, 144 thousand people lived in the city. The beaches of El Jadida serve as a holiday destination for both residents of Morocco and foreign tourists.
Coast
To the north of the fishing port is a city promenade with spacious beaches and hotels along the coast. Out of the city to the south, there is also the famous Beach with many villas that come to life in the summer, as well as a lagoon with oyster farms in Oulidia . This is a favorite place for walking citizens.
Fortress
Old fortress near the port. It is known for the case when about 3,000 soldiers died in the fire inside this fortress. Now there are residential areas and souvenir shops. To the left of the entrance, inside the fortress, at the end of the street there is a bakery of the city’s best traditional bread. On the same street to the right are the traditional hammam baths . Souvenir shops are located right from the entrance. Inside the fortress there is a sacred sacred place. The ground floor of the house with a source of water and one ray of light penetrating from above. Revered by Muslims. Also, after the Ramadan festival, a traditional music festival is held in the fortress. In 2009, the Moroccan film Wanderer was shot in the fortress.
Market
Opposite the entrance to the fortress is a market. He is especially lively during the Ramadan festival in September. At this time, the market is open at night until morning. Directly from the entrance to the fortress are located grocery stores and medical herbs. To the right goes the street with bread, fruits and various food items. To the left are shops with ceramics and other household goods. A little further directly located area with a clock tower. There is a hotel and a public shower in the square. Further directly shops gradually pass into shops of various goods.
Port
The city has a fishing port. Many private fishing wooden boats, several trawls and a fish market. The port has a yacht club. However, in this small port 3-5 yachts can be accommodated near the club's yacht pier, and 2-5 anchored nearby.
The ground floor of the yacht club building is occupied by the city windsurfing club, the top floor is a restaurant. Water and electricity are not provided. However, in 2009, the king of Morocco promised to carry out reconstruction.
Universities
There are two universities in the city - public and technical.
Tourism
The city is actively developing tourism. In 2010, Kerzner International built the 5-star Mazagan tourist resort north of the city center, with a casino, golf courses , shopping centers and other facilities [1] .
Russian-speaking community
The city has Moroccan-Ukrainian and Moroccan-Russian families. Moroccans were trained and married in Russia. There were two main waves. The first in Soviet times. Some teachers at local universities speak Russian. The second wave is the younger people who received a medical education in Russia. Usually pharmacy owners.
