Dipterology

Dipterology is an entomology section that studies members of the order Diptera insects (flies and mosquitoes). The name of science comes from the scientific Latin name of the detachment itself - Diptera. In 1990, the International Journal of Dipterology was created. [1] . It publishes articles and reviews on systematics, phylogeny, morphology, physiology and ecology of dipterous insects in English, including such important ones as the malaria mosquito and tsetse fly .

History

Dipterology, which studies diptera, as well as all entomology, originates from ancient times and cultures, which is explained by the constant presence in the environment of humans and domestic animals of diptera, parasites, and dead-eaters.

Societies

Ecophasia

The very fact of the number of biologists engaged in dipterans indicates the significance of this science. In the international database of electronic postal addresses there are 576 people (2007), and taking into account amateurs, twice as many (1043) [2] . This is due to the great diversity of Diptera: 120,000 species, 10,000 genera and 188 families in the world fauna.

  • Dipterist's Club of Japan . - In Japan, in 1996, the specialized Dipterist's Club of Japan was created, which includes more than 100 members [3] .
  • Malloch Society . - The Scottish Dipterologists Society was created in 1988 (The Malloch Society). The society received its name in honor of John Russell Malloch (1875-1963), the largest Scottish insect specialist. [4] .

Congresses

Once in 4 years dipterologists gather at their International congresses:

  • 8th International Congress of Dipterology - August 10–15, 2014 , Germany ( Potsdam ) [5]
