History
The city of Asiago was first mentioned in 1204 as Axiglagum . In the XIII-XVIII centuries, the city was the capital of the Federation of Seven Communities in the south of Tyrol (Asiago, Roana , Rotzo , Enogy , Fodza , Gallio , Lusiana ). The FSO was declared in 1310, but de facto existed since 1259. On February 20, 1404, the Federation of Seven Communities announced its accession to the Republic of Venice , which, for its part, guaranteed their privileges for the next four hundred years. The warranty was observed a little longer: 403 years. The Federation was abolished by "brazen will" of Napoleon I [1] , by his order, in 1807. Justice was not restored at the Vienna Congress - and the territory of the Federation was ceded to the Austrian Empire . October 21, 1866, after the defeat of Austria, the FSO territory was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy . Today it is known as the "Seven Municipalities of the Plateau."
In the First World War , May 18-19, 1916 in Asiago, fierce Italo-Austrian battles took place ( Battle of Asiago ), and almost no whole buildings remained in the city.
During the Second World War, the Highlanders of the “Seven Municipalities of the Plateau” served mainly in the divisions of Alpine riflemen . Among them - a native of Asiago , senior sergeant Mario Rigoni-Stern , later - a world famous writer.
In 2006, the territory of the “Seven Municipalities of the Plateau” was divided between the provinces of Vicenza and Trento . Asiago remained in the province of Vicenza.
Sport
The city has the Stadio Odegar ice palace, which is the home arena of the Asiago hockey club, playing in Serie A.
