History

For the first time, the toponym “Shandong” appeared during the time of the Jurchen Jin empire, when the “Eastern Shandong Province” (山东 东路, the administrative center is Idu ) and the “Western Province of Shandong” (山东 西路, the administrative center is Dongping ) were formed.

The single province of Shandong first appeared only during the Ming Empire; at that time, it included the Liaodong Peninsula . After the Manchu conquest of China, these lands became part of the Qing Empire, and the province, having lost Liaodong, acquired almost modern borders.

In the middle of the 20th century, when a full-blown civil war unfolded in China after the surrender of Japan, the mountainous regions of Shandong remained one of the main bases of the Chinese Communists. Fully Kuomintang troops were expelled from Shandong by June 1949. The created by the Communists during the partisan struggle became the basis of the Handan Special Region, formed in August 1949, and therefore part of the lands that were part of the Shandong Province before the war, became part of the Hebei Province.

After the formation of the PRC by the new authorities , the Pingyuan province was created in the center of the country, but already in 1952 it was disbanded, and its eastern lands were annexed to Shandong province. Then, in 1952, the border between the provinces of Shandong and Hebei was changed, and since then the province has acquired a modern shape. In addition, after the formation of the PRC, Xuzhou and Lianyungang were included in the composition of Shandong province, however, in 1953 the province of Jiangsu was formed, and these lands were transferred to its composition.

In 2019, Laiu City District was annexed to Jinan; its Gaicheng district retained its name, and the Laicheng district became the Laiu district.
