The 1979 Canadian Grand Prix is the fourteenth stage of the 2011 Formula One World Championship in motor racing. Auto racing took place on September 30, 1979 on a race track located on the island of Notre Dame in Montreal (later renamed the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit ).

During Friday's practice, Niki Lauda announced that he would not start at the Grand Prix and was leaving Formula 1. His place in the cockpit of “Brabema” was taken by the Argentine pilot of the British Formula 1 championship Ricardo Sunino who happened to be on the race track. Due to the refusal to participate in the prequalification, the organizers allowed the Alfa Romeo team to use only one car.
