Robert William Armstrong was born in Saginaw , Michigan in 1890. At the age of twelve, he moved to Seattle . In 1933, Armstrong played a major role in the cult films King Kong and Son of Kong . The prototype of the character of Armstrong, a bold and purposeful director Karl Danham, was the producer of the film Merian Cooper [1] . Due to the outward resemblance to Cooper, the producer of King Kong, Armstrong starred in several other producer films in roles that were, to some extent, based on the personality of Cooper himself. In the 1930s and 1940s, Armstrong was actively filming, his filmography includes more than 100 paintings [2] .
In 1949, a team of authors and producers who had previously shot King Kong made another adventure film about the huge gorilla, The Mighty Joe Young , where Armstrong played the lead role.
Armstrong actively starred until the early 1960s, retiring in 1963 [2] . On April 20, 1973, Armstrong died in his home in Santa Monica at the age of 82. Buried at Westwood Cemetery in Los Angeles .
