History

The order for the construction of the submarine was given on May 30, 1938 . The boat was laid down on September 16, 1939 at the Germaniaverft shipyard in Kiel under building number 600, and was launched on July 18, 1940 . The boat went into operation on August 31, 1940 under the command of Captain Lieutenant Gerd Schreiber.
