Biography
Born on January 1, 1925 in Yaroslavl in a Jewish family evacuated from Dvinsk with the outbreak of the First World War [3] Both his grandfathers, as well as his parents, despite the forced assimilation of Jews in the USSR, spoke Yiddish [2] . From an early age, Benjamin Basner was brought up in the Jewish spirit [2] .
Basner was greatly influenced by his grandfather, Hirsch Yakovlevich Gredor, a tailor by profession, who knew a large number of Jewish folk songs [4] . He studied violin at the Children's Music School No. 1 in Yaroslavl. One of the first major musical impressions in the life of young Basner was the performance in Yaroslavl in 1938 of the Fifth Symphony by Dmitry Shostakovich . At the end of the Yaroslavl College of Music in 1942, Basner was invited to the Yaroslavl Philharmonic as a soloist, but a year later he was drafted into the army, where he served as an arranger in a military orchestra and also repaired musical instruments.
In 1944, Basner was demobilized, and he entered the N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov LGK in the class of violin and composition. After graduating from the conservatory in 1949, he began performing as a soloist and orchestral musician. In 1955, Basner became a member of the Leningrad branch of the Union of Composers of the USSR and headed a commission on working with youth in it.
In subsequent years, the composer composed a lot, his operettas, military songs and film music (including “ Where the Motherland begins ” (from the film “ The Shield and the Sword ”), “At an Nameless Height” , “ From Separation to parting ”(from the movie“ Silence ”), “ Birch sap ” (from the movie“ The World Guy ”),“ The nightingale whistled for us ”(from the movie “ Days of the Turbins ” ),“ Song of the Ginger Puppy "(From the film" Teacher of Singing ")," It was recently, it was a long time ago "(from the film" Friends and Years ")," For the rest of my life "(from the film of the same name). Basner is also by number yes articles in music magazines of the USSR.
Great influence on the work of Basner had his long-term friendship with Dmitry Shostakovich. Shostakovich spoke well of Basner’s works and helped promote them on stage. Like Shostakovich, Basner highly appreciated the music of Gustav Mahler (whose influence is also noticeable in the music of the composer) and Jewish musical folklore.
In 1994, Basner was able to fulfill his old dream - to open the Jewish theater "Simha" ("Joy") in St. Petersburg, and at the first performance of the musical "Jewish Happiness" he himself performed the part of the violin.
V.E. Basner died on September 3, 1996 in the village of Repino near St. Petersburg . He was buried at Komarovsky cemetery .
