History
The word "dombai" ( Karach.-Balk. Dommay ) in translation from Karachay means "bison" [4] . Once in the Dombay forests, whole herds of Caucasian bison roamed. The emergence of the village is associated with the development of tourism in the region, the beginning of which dates back to the 1920s (although there is evidence that certain tourist groups have been in these places since 1911). In 1921, the first organized tourist base appeared here. Popularization of the resort has been gaining momentum since 1925 - in August of this year, one of the founders of mountaineering in the USSR, Boris Delaunay , climbed Sofrudja peak (south of the current village), after which a systematic survey and description of the surrounding peaks and passes began. In 1926, a tourist route was established along the Military Sukhumi Road (subsequently, the All-Union Tourist Route No. 43 ) [6] . According to some reports, since 1940, mountaineering descents and ascents have been carried out in Dombay [7] .
Large-scale construction of a sports complex in Dombayskaya Polyana began after the decision of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR No. 10001 dated 02.01.1960 "On the development of recreation, tourism, skiing in the highlands of KChAO ." In 1972 the Dombay hotel was commissioned, in 1976 the Crocus hotel, and by 1984 the Solnechnaya Polyana hotel was reconstructed. In 1936-1961, the alpine camp “Belalakaya” was created and developed (named for the mountain peak to the southwest of the village) [7] . In the upper reaches of the Alibek River, the Alibek climbing camp is located - one of the oldest in the Caucasus . The Dombay Waltz by Yuri Vizbor , written on April 19, 1961 in Alibek, became widely known for Dombay [8] . The status of an urban-type settlement was assigned in 1965 [9] .
Along with the construction of hotels and camp sites, cable cars were built - pendulum (commissioned in 1986), 5 phases of construction of single-seat and pair-seat roads to Mount Mussa-Achitara ( Musat-Cheri , completed in the 1960s, by 1971, by 1976, by 1978 and by 1987, respectively). Already in the post-Soviet period, in 2004-2007, three lines of the new cableway were built - one section of the gondola and two sections of the six-chair, which bring skiers to the very top of Mount Mussa-Achitara (about 3200 m) [7] .
