History
Built by architect Manuel Munoz Monasterio. The first stone was laid on December 2, 1956 . The stadium was opened on September 7, 1958 by a friendly match between Seville and Real Jaen .
The stadium hosted 2 matches of the 1982 World Cup :
- match of group 6 Brazil - USSR 2: 1,
- the famous semifinal of Germany - France 3: 3 (pen. 5-4).
4 years after the 1982 World Cup, the stadium hosted the 1985/86 European Cup final Barcelona - Steaua 0-0 (pen. 0-2), in which Romanian goalkeeper Helmut Ducadam deflected all 4 penalties from Barcelona.
Spain have not lost any of their 22 matches at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Sevilla has lost only 2 matches in European cups at all times to the Dutch AZ in the group stage of the 2006/07 UEFA Cup (forward scored by AZ Shot Arveladze scored in the 90th minute), which did not stop Sevilla win the UEFA Cup that season; and the return match of the 1/8 finals of the Champions League 2009/2010 to Moscow CSKA with a score of 1: 2.
The unofficial name of the stadium is “Bomboner”, which is mainly used in relation to the famous home stadium of the Argentinean club “ Boca Juniors ”.
