Title

The city was named after the cape on which it is located. The word Bohador comes from the Arabic “Abu Khatar”, which literally means “Father of danger”. Bujdur is the French version of the name.

History

The first European sailor to go around Cape Bohador in 1434 was the Portuguese sailor Zhil Eanes . Prior to this, the cape was considered insurmountable due to strong northeast winds. But superstition was worse than the winds for sailors: for many centuries it was believed that navigation beyond this cape was impossible, because the sea is teeming with monsters that butt, and the tackle of the ships light up. This belief was destroyed only by the report of Gil Eanesh, who circled Cape Bohador and already from Guinea, who said that "sailing here is as easy as at home, and this country is rich and there is plenty in it."

Starting in 1434, a new route was opened for Portuguese and other European ships to southern Africa and later to India . In connection with the intensification of shipping, a port settlement appears on the cape.

In the years 1452-1456, Pope Nicholas V and Calixtus III granted Portugal the right to own land, open to the south and east of Cape Bohador, "down to the Indians."

In 1884, Spain declared the coastal region from Cape Bohador to the Cap Blanc Peninsula its protectorate. In 1975, under the Madrid Treaty, the territory was transferred to Morocco , but in connection with the proclamation of the SADR in 1976, control over this region is still disputed.
