A self-taught musician, in 1788 he entered the orchestra of the Italian Comedy Theater in Paris, and in 1790 also the brass band of the National Guard. He enjoyed the patronage of Napoleon , but even after the restoration of the Bourbons he did not lose his favor by playing in the orchestra of the royal chapel until 1830. He taught the horn class at the Paris Conservatory since its inception, issued a training course for the horn ( French Méthode pour le cor ; 1802 ). The author of a number of compositions for his instrument, including concerts for horn and orchestra and various ensembles (the trio for three horns and the trio for horn, violin and piano are especially famous).
