Biography

Club career

As part of the Argentinos Juniors, Batista became the two-time Argentina champion and winner of the Libertadores Cup. The generation of players of this club of the 1980s is golden for the “red bugs” - the team has never won significant trophies both in Argentina and in the international arena, while remaining a traditional provider of personnel for stronger clubs due to its magnificent academy - and among these players Batista played one of the key roles. After Batista had already become the world champion in the national team, he moved to River Plate and won another national championship in the 1989/90 season. He ended his career as a Batista in 1999 at the All Boys Club.

Team appearances

In 1985-1990, Batista played for the Argentine national team. During this period, he twice participated in the world championships (1986 - champion, 1990 - vice champion) and America's Cup (1987 - 4th place and 1989 - 3rd place).

Coaching career

Immediately after the completion of his playing career, he began to train the Uruguayan club Vella Vista . He also coached his native Argentinos, Nueva Chicago, Godoy Cruz. But Batista achieved the highest achievement in 2008, having won the Beijing Olympic Games with the Argentine national team. Batista was appointed to the position of coach of the Olympic team at the end of 2007.

On November 2, 2010, the Argentine Football Association appointed the head coach of the national team until 2014 [1] . In 2011, the Argentine national team led by Batista participated in the home Cup of America . There, “albiseleste” reached the stage of the quarterfinal, where she lost to Uruguay in the penalty shootout [2] . Despite the fact that of the four meetings played at the tournament, the team won only one, the coach himself said that he could not be satisfied, but was satisfied with the actions of his players [1] .

July 26, 2011 Sergio Batista resigned as head coach of the Argentine national team after an unsuccessful performance at the America's Cup, and a special committee of the National Football Federation accepted his resignation.

On May 30, 2012, Batista was appointed head coach of the Shanghai Shenhua Chinese club [3] [4] .

In May 2015, Bastista was appointed head coach of the Bahrain team [5] .
