Biography

Severino Varela began his career at the River Plate Club from his hometown of Montevideo . Three years later, he became the leader of the Uruguayan football “ Peñarol ”, where he became the 4-time champion of Uruguay. In 1943, Varela for 38 thousand pesos was sold to the Argentinean Boca Juniors , where, together with Sosa and Boyer, he formed the center of attack of the team. In Boke, Varela twice became the champion of Argentina, scoring 46 goals for the club (13 from the penalty spot ) in 74 matches. Varela scored especially often in the main Argentinean “ classic ”: five goals against the River Plate in six matches.

In 1946, Varela returned to Peñarol , where he completed his sports career a year later.

In the Uruguayan national team, Varela spent 24 matches, scoring 19 goals. In 1942, he and the team became the champion of South America .

Severino Varela stood out on the field not only with his game, but also with a rare piece of equipment for football players - a white cap [1] .
