In 1899, in St. Petersburg, with the participation of Romanov and his projects, the first domestic electric car was built, designed to carry two people and became known as the “cuckoo”. Its weight was 750 kg, of which 370 kg was occupied by a battery, which was enough for 60 km at a speed of 35 miles per hour (about 39 km / h). An omnibus was also created, carrying 17 people at a speed of 20 km / h over a distance of the same 60 km.
In 1902, an electric 20-seater omnibus was built at the Dux factory in Moscow for servicing hotels. The design feature of the chassis steel pneumatic tires.
However, the development of electric transport in the country required the support of the state. On January 19, 1901, Romanov submitted a petition to the St. Petersburg City Duma to open 10 routes. This required 80 omnibuses, for a total of more than 500,000 rubles. To find such huge money, it was decided to establish a joint-stock company, which was ravaged, as the direct competitors - owners of riders and numerous industrialists - were clearly dissatisfied with the new type of transport. From their submission, all the efforts of Romanov to establish a regular movement of their electric buses failed. Seeing that his ideas did not find popularity, Romanov turned to works in other areas of electrical engineering.
According to Automobilist magazine, by the middle of 1914 there were already eight electric carriages in the country: 4 trucks, 1 three-wheeled van and 3 passenger private cars. The magazine, trying to assess the prospects for the spread of electric vehicles in Russia, wrote:
... Meanwhile, electric cars could be very useful ... One should only beware of one-sided attitude to electric crews and apply them only where they are really on the stand with their products in the international place. Not competition, but practice will show in which area of movement petrol cars should be used, and in which - electric ...
