Biography
The son of a musician, from childhood playing the violin and trumpet, at the age of 12 he began to compose, at the age of 13 he took the place of the first trumpeter of the Gents Opera. From 1804 , he studied at the Paris Conservatory under Frederick Duvernois (trumpet) and Charles Simon Catel (composition), but spent much of his time in military orchestras who participated in Napoleon's campaigns . He also took lessons from Antonin Reihi .
From 1812 he played the trumpet in the orchestra of the Feydo Theater . Put three own operas: "Night at the castle" ( fr. Une nuit au Château ; 1818 ), "Island of Babilari" ( fr. L'île de Babilary ; 1819 ) and "Unfaithful" ( fr. Les Infidèles ; 1823 ), all three on the libretto by Paul de Coca . Enjoyed the protection of Talleyrand .
In 1825 he returned to the Netherlands, conducted opera orchestras in Ghent, Antwerp , The Hague , wrote and staged several more operas. In 1835 , he founded the Ghent Conservatory and led it to death. The most significant student of Mangal was Francois Auguste Gevart .
