Life and work

By origin, Rufino Tamayo is from the Zapotec Indians . In 1917 - 1921, the young artist studied at the Academy of San Carlos in the capital of Mexico , and then, in 1926 - 1928 he lives in New York , where he gets acquainted with modernism in painting. After returning to his homeland, Rufino Tamayo is a professor at the School of Modern Art in Mexico City. His works of art of this time show a resemblance to the German style of the 20-30s of the XX century, “ New Materiality ”.

In the 30s he received a number of orders for the creation of works of monumental, wall painting. In these works, the influence of muralistic tendencies is clearly felt. At the same time, the artist was very impressed with the pre-Columbian art of the peoples of America , which affected the development of his own special artistic style. In his works, R. Tamayo is primarily passionate about the life of Mexicans and their concerns. He uses ancient Mexican symbols and mythical images in his works in order to more clearly express the main human problems, such as loneliness, irritation and quarrels, sadness and so on. Also, the dualism inherent in the ancient Mexican worldview is reflected in the paintings of the master. Rufino Tamayo belongs to the second generation of muralist artists.

In the paintings of Rufino Tamayo, the creative influence of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque is also felt.
