Biography

Karel Plikhal began playing the guitar from the age of 15. He graduated from an industrial engineering college, then worked as a designer and stoker at the theater in Olomouc , until he began to study music. At first, he played in various little-known country-swing groups (Hučka, Falešní hráči and Plíharmonyje), then in 1983 he first appeared solo. From 1985 to 1993, Plichal collaborated with Czech folk musician Emil Pospisil , and from 1995 to 1999, with Peter Freund. He is a four-time winner of the festival of folk music Porta.

Karel Plihal is the author of music for many productions of the Moravian Theater in Olomouc, including Zlatovláska , Sluha dvou pánů , Utrpení Dona Perlimplína , Manon Lescaut , Cyrano , Zimní pohádka , Pašije and Giroflé-Giroflá . He wrote music on some works by Josef Kaynar , and also produced the recording of albums by such artists as Jaromir Nogavits , Peter Fiala, the Eben brothers and the band Bokomara.

In 2002 he played the role of himself in the film of Peter Zelenka Rok Ďábla (“The Year of the Devil”).

In 2006, Plikhal published a collection of his poems Jako cool v plotě with illustrations by Miroslav Bartak . For the album Vzduchoprázdniny , released in 2012, he received “Angel” (the award of the Czech Academy of Popular Music) in the category “Folk and Country”.
