Historical background
The bridge was erected in 1968-1969. according to the project of architect Rachelle Abbovna Vladimirskaya and engineer Kiriyenko over the military descent [1] . Its original and official name is “Komsomolsky” because it connected the Seaside and Komsomolsky Boulevards (now - M. Zhvanetsky Boulevard ). It was built on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution of 1917 and should have been opened in 1967, but were late. So it was possible to walk on it only from 1968. It is interesting that according to the project the bridge had to be in retro style in order to fit into the classical building. But during the construction they decided to remove all the decor, the bridge turned out in a constructivist spirit. The bridge is an exact copy of the Duchess of Charlotte ’s bridge in Luxembourg
Name Origin
The name "Teschin" has two versions. First: because it is the longest and narrowest in the city, and also swayed by a strong wind: "just like mother-in-law's tongue" - they joked about this.
The second suggests that the then head of the region, the first secretary of the party’s regional committee , Mikhail Safinovich Sinitsa, allegedly went to visit his mother-in-law in the 1970s [2] [3] . Evil tongues claim that the city this expensive construction, with virtually no communication value, was needed because of the love of the then communist head of the city for skinny pancakes. And since the son-in-law lived on Primorsky Boulevard, and his mother-in-law lived on Gogol Street , 1 through a beam, the promenade of five hundred meters in a roundabout way across the Sabaneev bridge seemed to the head of Odessa unbearably long. So the idea of creating a direct pedestrian bridge. But over time, it turned out that the bridge connecting Primorsky and Komsomolsky boulevards created a continuous walking route with a length of about 2 km and acquired important practical significance for the city.
"Heart of Love"
In 2011, in Odessa, as part of the national project “Share your love for Ukraine”, the “Love Heart” installation was inaugurated, which solved a twofold task: it helped preserve Odessa's "Mother-in-law Bridge" and preserve a beautiful wedding tradition. This is an art installation in the form of a metal [volumetric] heart - not just a gift to Odessa lovers, but also the salvation of Teschino Bridge. The condition of the bridge worsened every year due to the numerous locks attached to its railing from loving couples from all over the city. Now locks can be left right on the heart - and the bridge will not suffer, and the tradition is preserved. [four]
