Career

Bassler was born in Neustadt and began his career in the local football team. In 1984 he joined the Kaiserslautern youth team. In 1987 he was attracted to the training of the basic structure, but over the next two seasons he spent only one match in the Bundesliga .

In 1989, due to the complete absence of playing practice and prospects, he left Kaiserslautern and moved to the Rot-Weiss Essen , the Second Bundesliga club, where he spent two seasons, the second of which ended with the deprivation of the professional license of the Rot-Weiss and sending it to the lowest division. Seasons 1991/92 and 1992/93 Basler spent in Berlin " Hertha ", in those years also played in the Second Bundesliga. In the first season, “Hertha” was the third, in the second - the fifth. Both seasons Basler spent as a solid player in the main team, one of the team leaders, scored 17 goals.

In 1993 he moved to the Bundesliga club Bremen " Bremen ". In the 1993/94 season, "Werder" became the eighth in the championship, but won the German Cup . The following season, 1994/95, Werder became second, but in the 1995/96 season, it rolled back to the middle of the table - to 9th place.

Basler progressed rapidly, making his debut in the German national team in 1994. Took part in the 1994 World Cup , played only in one match - starting for the Germans at the tournament, against Bolivia , coming on as a substitute for half an hour (the Germans won 1: 0), the rest of the tournament sat on the bench. The Germans flew to the World Cup in the quarter finals, losing to the Bulgarians 1: 2.

Mario was the top scorer in the 1994/95 Bundesliga season, scoring 20 goals and sharing the title with Heiko Herrlich of Borussia, Mengladbach . All three seasons in Werder Basler were a stable player of the Bremen base and one of the best in the team.

In the summer of 1996 he was called to the national team for the European Championship . The tournament eventually became victorious for the Germans, and Basler never once entered the field because of an injury received shortly before the start of the tournament.

Before the start of the 1996/97 season, he left Werder for Bayern Munich . Three subsequent seasons were very successful for both Basler and his club. Seasons 1996/97 and 1998/99 became the champions for Bavaria, and in the 1997/98 season, though, the Bavarians were second in the Bundesliga, losing to Kaiserslautern (the club where Basler started his career), but they won the German Cup . The team also won three German League Cups : 1997 (the first ever trophy draw), 1998, 1999. In the 1998/99 season, Bayern reached the Champions League final . In the finals at the Barcelona Camp Nou, it was Basler who opened the scoring, as if breaking through a penalty kick in the 6th minute. On the 89th minute, when the Germans were still leading 1: 0, Basler, who had a great game, was replaced. But then, already in added time, Sirkörse equalized the score, and after a minute Sulscher scored the winning goal (note that both players took the place of substitution). Manchester United won 2: 1.

In November 1999, Basler, winning a goodbye in the summer, before the start of the championship, the third League Cup in Bayern, went to Kaiserslautern, returning there exactly ten years later. There he played four seasons, in the first three the team kept in the upper half of the table (5th, 7th and 8th places respectively), and the fourth ended in failure in the league (14th place), but the club made its way to the final of the Cup of the country, where he lost to Bavaria's obviously stronger player 1: 3. Basler in those years played unstably, did not always fall into the composition - the years they took their own.

At the end of the 2002/03 season, Mario went to finish the game in Qatar , signing a contract with the club Al-Rayyan . He played with him, in particular, Fernando Hierro ; the team, despite the presence of masters of this level, had a mediocre season, after which Basler ended his playing career.

For the first time in the 2004/05 season, he tried himself as a coach, heading the German Regional League club (the third echelon of German football), “ Jan ” from Regensburg . At the end of the season, the club flew division lower in the Bavarian Oberliga, and even went bankrupt.

In the 2007/08 season, he worked as an assistant at the Second Bundesliga club Koblenz . In 2008–2010, he coached the Eintracht club from Trier , playing in the Western Regional League (fourth level of the German football pyramid).

On October 24, 2011, Basler was appointed head coach of the Rot-Weiss from Oberhausen [1] .

Personal life

Basler was very independent in his behavior: “I did everything in defiance of public opinion. Playing football, smoked two packs a day. 15 minutes before the start of the workout, I could have a glass of beer. And I did everything openly. Sometimes he specially slandered himself - he emphasized: look at how independent I am ” [2] .
