Vasily Melentyevich Mendrin ( April 21 ( May 3 ) 1866 , Ekaterinodar - May 22, 1920 , Vladivostok ) - a large Russian orientalist (Japanese), professor at the Eastern Institute , organizer and rector of the Vladivostok Higher Polytechnic School (1918).

Biography
Born in Ekaterinodar in the family official. He graduated from the Moscow ( Alekseevskoe ) Military School (1889) and was sent to serve in the Trans-Baikal . He received an Oriental education in the Vladivostok Oriental Institute (1901-1906) in the Japanese category. In May — August 1903, he commanded for language and regional training in Tokyo .
During the years of the Russo-Japanese War, V. M. Mendrin served in the active forces. He was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav III degree with swords and bow, St. Anne III degree with swords and bow.
Following the advice of Archbishop Nicholas (Kasatkin) , V.M. Mendrin took up the translation of the "History of the Shogunate in Japan" ("The Unofficial History of Japan" - " Nihon Gaisi " [1] ) Paradise Sanyo , of capital labor, which Vladyka himself studied in his youth attached great importance to understanding the history of Japan [2] . Out of 22 books written in the platform , he translated 6, which were published in Izvestia of the Eastern Institute in 1910-1916, supplied with extensive historical and linguistic commentaries titled "Siogun-i-Seyi Taishiogun Bakufu". Linguistic and historical essays "). Mendrin coined the term “Siogunat” (“Siogunat”) [3] , now transcribed as “ Shogunate ” [4] . In addition, he is the author of works on grammar and stylistics of the Japanese language, a translator of several other works of Japanese literature. In the History of Japanese Literature, William Aston Mendrin first translated about 100 lyric poems into Russian, including Basho's haiku [5] .
Since 1910, he was among the full-time teachers of the Eastern Institute. Mendrin is the author of a textbook on the written Japanese style (Sorobun. Analysis of the Japanese epistolary style, part 1-2, Vladivostok, 1910-14.).
In 1911, Mendrin entered the graduate school (Daigakuin) of Tokyo Imperial University. N. Malevsky-Malevich, a Russian ambassador to Tokyo, took a great part in enrolling at Mendrin University. The following letter of Malevsky-Malevich to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Count Komura, dated March 20 (April 2), 1911, was preserved:
| My dear count! The Russian scholar Mendrin, who devoted himself to the study of Japanese and for this purpose has been living in Tokyo for three years, asked me to get permission for him to attend professors of philology and law at Tokyo Imperial University. Knowing Mendrin as a person of devotion to science and impeccable nature, I ask Your Excellency to use your services to my colleague from the Ministry of Education so that Mendrin can be accepted to the Imperial University of Tokyo to attend the above-mentioned classes during this school year and also next year [6] . |
On May 25, Komura replied to the Russian ambassador:
| I immediately tried to inform the Ministry of Education about the contents of a letter of March 20 (April 2), 1911, which Your Excellency sent me on the issue of Mendrin’s wish, a Russian scientist, to be allowed to attend classes at Tokyo Imperial University. Mr. Komatsubara has just informed me, and I have the honor to convey to Your Excellency that, at his request, it was decided to allow Mendrin to Daigakuin as a student studying literature ... |
In 1918, after separation from the Eastern Institute of the Higher Polytechnic, Mendrin was elected its rector.
V.Mendrin died in Vladivostok , was buried at the Pokrovsky cemetery , his grave was not preserved. Its extensive scientific archive has been lost.
On September 24, 2005, a monument was opened in the Walk of Glory of FESTU to V. M. Mendrin [7] .
