Last fight
Shortly after the start of the Great Patriotic War , from August 4, 1941, under the command of Senior Lieutenant L. A. Shestakov on patrol on the Cape Cape -Navolok line - Kildin - West meridian [3] , on August 10, 1941, at 04:25, he discovered 3 German destroyers of the 6th Krigsmarine Flotilla of destroyers ( Z-4 “Richard Bitzen” , Z-10 “Hans Lodi” and Z-16 “Friedrich Ekoldt” ). He transmitted a radio message about a detected enemy to the operational duty officer of the Northern Fleet , thereby completing his combat mission.
After that, "The Fog" began a maneuver of evasion and a smoke screen. The German destroyers, who had multiple superiority in the course and artillery, got close to the "Fog" by 50 cables - from the third volley they were defeated. TFR number 12 received 11 direct hits with 127 mm projectiles. The commander and commissar of the ship were killed. Because of the damage to the stern gun , the Fog could not return fire (the enemy ships were outside the shelling sector of the nose gun). Nevertheless, the crew continued to fight heroically for the survival of the ship, trying to reach its shore. During the battle, the radio operator, senior sailor KV Blinov and wounded steering sailor KD Semyonov accomplished a feat — under the Nazi shells, they hoisted the flag of the ship, shot down from the mast.
The coastal battery fire, which was opened late due to poor operational interaction, drove the German destroyers away, which, together with the smoke screen, saved the lives of 37 of the 52 crew members who sank at 05:50 with the Fog flag raised. The only awards to the crew of the ship were gifts from the workers of Murmansk , presented in the evening after the battle.
The destroyer Z-4 "Richard Bitzen" was damaged by coastal artillery and sent to Germany for repairs.
Memory
Passing by the Kildin Island, the coordinates are , warships lower the flags and give a long beep, honoring the feat of the Fog .
In the city of Polyarny (Murmansk region) there is a street named after Heroes of "Mist" [1] .
