On November 20 ( December 2 ), 1861, High Porta adopted the Firman on the administrative structure of Moldova and Wallachia, which approved the political and administrative unification of Moldova and Wallachia as autonomous territories within the Ottoman Empire. On December 11 (23), 1861, Alexandru Ioan Cuza , being simultaneously the ruler of Moldova and Wallachia (with different governments until this date), published a proclamation confirming the formation of the Romanian nation. After 44 days, January 24 ( February 5 ), 1862 , the state assemblies of Moldova and Wallachia declared Bucharest the capital of the country. From this day on, the Principality of Moldova ceased to exist. The modern Republic of Moldova is located on the territory of Bessarabia , separated from the Principality of Moldova and annexed to the Russian Empire in 1812.
