Rattle (shamanism)

Rattle and pattern

Rattle - a percussion and noise instrument used in dances, as well as in shamanistic rituals. The main elements are the camera (the rattle itself) and the filler. The chamber can be made of a wide variety of materials: dried pumpkin, unprocessed, so-called raw skin , wood, horn, tortoise shell, ceramics, or any prepared containers. The filler is pebbles or beans. Rattles usually also have a grip. The rattle is often decorated with feathers , beads , a picture is applied to the camera.

Usage

For the use of a rattle as a musical instrument, see Maracas .

In shamanistic traditions, the rattle is used in shamanistic rituals of invocation of spirits and processes of shamanic healing . From the point of view of the shaman , the rattle is a kind of “antenna power” - an object that invokes helpers and helps bring their strength and help to the work of the shaman, and is used at the beginning of the ritual. In the shamanistic worldview, the rattle is endowed with its own Spirit , capable of independent manifestation. In the ritual, the rattle seems to “direct” the hand of the shaman [1] . In some traditions, the rattle is an analogue of a tambourine and accompanies all shambles from beginning to end [2] .
