DVB-SH

DVB-SH ( Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite services to Handhelds ) is a digital mobile broadcasting ( DVB ) standard that allows you to transfer digital video signals to mobile devices, such as PDAs , mobile phones or portable televisions based on hybrid satellite / terrestrial data transmission , for example on GPRS .

The DVB-SH broadcast standard was adopted on February 14, 2007 [1] and approved by ETSI in March 2008. It allows receiving a broadcast signal both through terrestrial repeaters and directly via satellites. A similar technology is used for broadcasting in S-DMB format. Basically, a system consists of one or more geostationary satellites . Since it is necessary to be in line of sight for perfect reception of a signal from a satellite, reception in large buildings can be difficult. To overcome these difficulties, satellite broadcasting in densely populated centers is supported by relay stations. In addition, this standard supports hybrid terrestrial broadcasting to mobile and fixed television sets in a single compressed channel (multiplex).

In May 2010, the CIS demonstrated the practical transfer of traffic in the DVB-SH standard on a real network in the UHF (UHF) band, which is usually used for home broadcast television and DVB-H mobile television.

In 2010, Ukraine determined the choice of digital broadcasting standard between DVB-SH and DVB-T2 . [2]

DVB-SH Features

  • a large selection of spectral regions where a solution can be implemented (up to 3 GHz);
  • good spectral efficiency, which allows us to talk about the cost-effectiveness of the solution;
  • the possibility of using hybrid solutions satellite + ground-based repeater infrastructure, which allows for maximum coverage of the territory.

Technical Features of DVB-SH

The DVB-SH standard was developed for use in frequencies below 3 GHz, with support for the L and S groups of UHF frequencies, which is an improvement and addition to the DVB-H standard at the physical level . The DVB-SH standard, as a standard based on DVB-H , supports IP DVB Datacast ( IPDC ), EPG , protection standards and service acquisition.
