Born in the city of Chirpan in Central Bulgaria , after graduating from the Military Academy in Istanbul, he participated in the war against Russia (1828-1829) , then continued his military education in Vienna (1836-1841). During the new war against Russia (the Eastern, or Crimean War ) he commanded the Anatolian army , was defeated near Bashkadiklar on December 1, 1853 , was put on trial, but acquitted.

In 1862, under the leadership of Omer Pasha, he participated in a campaign in Montenegro , during the rebellion of 1867 - 1868, he commanded an observational corps in Thessaly on the island of Crete . Under Murad V in 1876 ​​he was made Minister of War and at the same time Commander-in-Chief of the Turkish Army , then Minister of Police, began work on reorganizing the army in a European manner, opened several military schools, but with the accession of Abdul-Hamid II on August 31, 1876 ​​he was removed from his post Minister of War. Appointed commander of the army in the war against Serbia and Montenegro , defeated the Serbs under Junis and received the rank of Marshal (Mushira).

In the next war with Russia (1877-1878) he was commander in chief on the Danube , failed to prevent the Russian troops from crossing the Danube, was forced to retreat, was deprived of command on July 23, 1877, and exiled to Rhodes , where he died several years later.
