Al-Minya ( Minya ) ( Arabic: المنيا ) is a governorate in the Arab Republic of Egypt . The administrative center is the city of El Minya . It is located in the center of the country, south of the Nile Delta and Beni-Sueif Governorate , west of the Red Sea Governorate, east of Al-Ghiz Governorate and north of Wadi al-Gedid and Asyut governorates. One of the most densely populated governorates of Upper Egypt .

Title
The name of the governorate and its own city of El Minya dates back to the hieroglyph Manaat - an abridged version of the spelling of Manaat Khufu - the full name of the pharaoh Khufu (Cheops). This character is found in the tombs of Beni Hassan . Later, in the Coptic language, the word was transformed into Moon , which means home . Even later, the word was Arabized and turned into today's El Minya .

The governorate consists of 9 administrative centers (districts), 10 cities and 57 rural local communities, which include 346 villages and 1429 small settlements. Governorate cities:
- New Minya is a new city on the east bank of the Nile, opposite El Minyi.

Industry
Leading industries include food processing (including sugar refineries, onion processing), cotton processing, perfumery , cement production, quarrying (mainly sandstone ) and brick production.
Agriculture
The main crops include sugarcane , cotton , legumes , onions , garlic , tomatoes , potatoes , melons and grapes .
Tourism
Tourism is well developed in the governorate, since there are many ancient Egyptian, Roman, Coptic and Muslim historical monuments. Main Attractions:
- Amarna (Tel el-Amarna) - monuments of Ancient Egypt, including Ahetaton ;
- Beni Hassan - monuments of ancient Egypt;
- Germopolis - monuments of the Greco-Roman period;
- Oksirinh - a place of discovery of ancient papyrus ;
- Abu Fan Monastery .
